Coffee for 50 Cents?
September 14th 2006 12:06
If you've ever lived in NY or Washington DC (or some other large rat infested American city) you'll be familiar with the 50 cent coffees: they come from the Middle Eastern guys in a little silver cage, rolled out to the nearest subway corner every morning. He sells dry muffins, usually bordering on the stale side, but most importantly, he sells that watered down sludge for 50 cents. Don't knock the quality! That stuff packs quite a punch and you'll be buzzing for hours!
Iranian director, Ramin Bahrani, debuts his new film "Man Push Cart" about that guy on the corner. Launched at the DC Labor Filmfest, the film follows the mornings of one push cart vendors, slumping through the streets at 3:00 am to make sure he serves the even the earliest commuter, Starbucks is certainly not that dedicated!
A poignant neorealist tale, if you want to catch it you're going to have to pack a bag (minus the bottles of water!) and head over to DC to catch it at the AFI Silver Theatre! Some more bad news, airlines aren't letting you take your cups of coffee on board anymore either.
