Coffee shops historically have been a gathering spot for poets, artists and malcontents seeking a forum to espouse their views; which just happens to be the purpose of this community. So, let's have at it.

Cha Yen, . . . a Sensuous Experience

March 6th 2008 07:42

Hey guys, I just made some fresh hot Cha Yen, it’s a full bodied and delicious Thai tea; would you all like a mug full while I finish my lunch prep work?

What’d you mean, what’s it made from? Here’s the recipe you schmuck, and buy your own Danish while you’re at it, hahaha. Are we really brothers?

Traditional Thai Iced Tea Recipe – Cha Yen from Thailand

1 cup Thai Tea (Cha Thai), available at most Asian Markets and online.
6 cups water, preferably clean, fresh and bug free
1 cup Sugar, palm sugar is best
1 can Evaporated Milk, or Half-and-Half cream

1. Bring the water to a boil in a large saucepan
2. Add the tea and remove the pan from heat
3. Stir the tea leaves in the water
4. Steep for about 5 minutes
5. Pour the brew through a coffee filter or a fine-mesh strainer into a large pitcher
6. Add the sugar to the hot tea and stir to dissolve it
7. Cool to room temperature
8. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve
9. Fill tall glasses with crushed ice.
10. Add enough of the tea to fill the glasses to within 1 inch from the top
11. Then float 3 to 4 tablespoons of evaporated milk over the ice in each glass
12. Or, do the same using half-and-half creamer for a richer flavor

Hey quiet down, guys! Do you want the rest of the story or are you going to keep tormenting me? Never mind, I'm telling the rest of the story anyway, you need the education. Keep it up and I'm going to 86 the lot of you, family or not!

Traditionally the tea used to make Cha Yen is a low-quality black tea grown in the northern hills of Thailand. The tea is placed in a strainer and boiling water is poured over it 4 or 5 times. The tea becomes a muddy red color and is VERY strong. The tea is poured into a plastic bag over lots of ice, sugar-water syrup is added, evaporative milk is poured over the top, a straw is inserted into the baggy and you are handed your personal package of tasty Cha Yen. The only way to drink the elixir!

Thai Tea is best made with a quality Oolong Tea; although it may be healthier for you, it’s definitely less adventurous. That being case, I usually reject that recipe and get the bulk stuff at the funkiest Asian Market I can find. This is a great after dinner drink to be sure; make sure you share it with rowdy friends, it’s a crowd pleaser. For added impact, lock the doors to the restrooms and hide the keys, it’s always good for a laugh.

Heres the really bad joke of the day:

A Touristess comes into the Coffee Quip and notices there's a "peel and win" sticker on her coffee cup. So she peels it off and immediately starts screaming, “I’ve won a motor home! I've won a motor home!"

Our new waitress says, "What, that's impossible. The biggest prize is a free Lunch."
But the Touristess keeps on screaming, "I've won a motor home! I've won a motor home!"

She was absolutely raising the roof with her excited ruckus, so the waitress called in our future ex-assistant manager. When he finally appeared and was brought up to date, he went over and says, "Ma'am, I'm sorry, but you're mistaken. You couldn't possibly have won a motor home because we didn't have that as a prize!"

The Touristess says, "No, it's not a mistake. I've won a motor home!" She was nearly insane with excitement by then and fairly dancing with joy.

She hands the ticket to the assistant manager and he reads... "W I N A B A G E L, " and then gave her the keys to my vintage VW Van, before starting his latest job search.

Don’t you remember her, she’s the Touristess that got off from the ship in Juneau and asked one of the stewards standing on the dock, “what’s the elevation here?” “About 1,600 feet above sea level,” he replied, adding, “If you need further local information, visit the Coffee Quip across the street.”

And damn it, she did.

Hey, any of you want to empty the trash for a Danish with that Cha???

I really need a nap.

This time I mean it, my brothers are not allowed in here again, the free loading, bad joke telling, non trash throwing, lay about slugs.

Oh wow, this hammock feels sooooo, good ....z z zzzz

LOw quality, low quality....that will never do, did you mention China, lot of boiling and freezing going on there, I just came for the quips really, and I'll have one of yours on the house, rather than do it myself. Danish? not at any price. Do you have some FRESH fruit I can buy I don't want to be considered MEAN, and you do make a MEAN brew. What else do you ferment, you must make your money somewhere, obviously not in the coffee house, you're always giving things away to compensate for sleeping in that cat's cradle, poor little pussy.

You're a tad cantankerous today, it isn't the Thai Cha is it, any relation to Thai Chi or all the other Thai wat's is names around the place. Oh, you've taken on the Franchise, oh well, sorry to see you sinking.

But I'll always be back for whatever I can scrounge.

My dear Ravin' fren, katyzzz
