Coffee shops historically have been a gathering spot for poets, artists and malcontents seeking a forum to espouse their views; which just happens to be the purpose of this community. So, let's have at it.

Kopi Luwak ~World's Costliest Coffee

April 11th 2008 11:19
Do you know what a civet is? This is what I know, they have a cat ~ fox like body, come from Africa, Madagascar, Indonesia and mainland Asia but not all at once. They are intensely private omnivores’ that appreciate a good quiche, oddly they prefer to mate in private and eat coffee bean fruit rather than drink the brewed roasted beans with some berry juice.

The rascals we’re concerned with come from Sumatra and are the only known natural manufacturers of kopi luwak. That name alone conjures up strange mental images of some deranged backstreet rage bands’ lead vocalist. But that isn’t where we’re headed.

Civet musk is worth big bucks because it’s a fragrance and stabilizing agent for perfume and it’s produced by both sexes. Cool eh? Well, they also manufacture something else by eating only the choicest of red coffee bean berries, which are then, processed internally and eventually eliminated, after having been converted into that valuable product known as kopi luwak. The major ingredient used to produce a very exotic and expensive coffee. And please, I really don’t wanna know about uses for any of its other bodily discharges not matter what its value.

Kopi Luwak is the world's rarest, most expensive and most fabled coffee. Selling for a rousing $750 a pound in NY or $50 a cup (or more), it has a flavor that is slightly smoky and pungent with a brewing aroma reminiscent of its manufacturing process.

Now, before you go rushing off to Madagascar or to Sumatra Indonesia to become civet herders and kopi kuwak moguls, there’s a glitch; a shortage of the mandatory factory workers, the civets; they’re being trapped into extinction and are becoming as rare as the coffee they manufacture. Sadly, you can’t just toss a male and female into a cage and expect kittens (like you can with most drunken sots of the human strain), typical of most forced marriages, there are problems and they tend to nag each other to death. But give them a dark jungle, a few fermented berries and an opportunity to be themselves, things work out. Anyway, that’s the story.

Sadly, Raven’s Brew Coffee has dropped the Kopi Luwak product; the manufactures aren’t able to maintain constant levels of production.

So, who wants a sample? It possesses a wildly earthy flavor and aroma. It’s free and does include a large serving of cherry strudel.

The after snack and coffee mouthwash is only $35 a shot, but hey, the experience: it’s priceless.

Thank God, it is too expensive for me. Plus the after cure.

You seem to have it on your mind today, Raven I wonder what brought this on.

Ah, it's entirely accidental katyzzz, I ran into the inspiration while cruising the web and it captured my attention; I thought I changed the posting date, but eh, nope ....

It is amazingly expensive and the manufacturers warranty leaves a lot to be desired, so it's off my personal menu.

Interesting! I wonder what in the bean the civets like...
At that price, definitely only for a true coffee connoisseur.

Hiya Lara, it's the berry pulp around the bean that trips their taste buds on. I could only afford to smell it at $5 a whiff.

After going through that coffee production process, it gives a whole new meaning to "who gives a crap..."

Howard, I'd have to venture a guess and say, it's the civets, they gave their all....
