Take a Break ~ a Public Service Announcement
July 17th 2008 20:40
Hey, welcome to the Coffee Quip. One of the things that educators know that employers seem to ignore is the value of a break from the dreadful pressure and god awful tedium of most jobs. Most jobs defined: Those fields which aren’t even close to the cutting edge of career opportunities.
While in school, particularly at the elementary level, pent up bundles of energy in the form of children need frequent breaks to drain off that excess energy; to chat, quarrel, socialize, run, play, scream, shout, gossip, tell secrets, throw stuff, in short an opportunity to degauss themselves so that they can again focus on the classroom activities.
The same holds true for adults, breaks help us degauss n regenerate, and we need to do this periodically throughout the work day. It’s a practice that should be etched in stone, period, end of discussion.
Another important item: proper hydration, is of paramount import for the brain’s health, while focused upon our tasks many of us forget to drink liquids other than the three day old coffee setting on our cluttered desktops in that sip lidded foam cup buried under heaps of files and notes for two weeks growing hair. Keep bottles of water or natural fruit juice handy (but resist the colas and the cognac) and learn to sip while you work. Room temperature is best for the body, but cool is OK.
Sipping a hot drink at the desk isn’t a break, it’s never finished while hot. Save the luxury hot drinks with caffeine for the proper break, away from the desk and work area. The idea should be to refresh the mind for a few minutes not stare at the constant reminders that you’re overloaded. For the body, a short walk on some stairs followed with a stretch or two can do wonders for the psyche; doing it with workplace friends is wonderfully empowering and finishing with some chatting over a warm drink strengthens bonds.
Workers on breaks don’t go postal and blast cannons at their fellows; hostile, stressed out workers do.
This has been a self indulgent conscience driven public service announcement from your friends at the Coffee Quip.
Humor:
If you don't pay your exorcist, you may be repossessed.
Be careful if you’re feeling too big for your britches, you could be exposed in the end.
If you don’t pay your taxes, you’ll get liened on.
A will is nothing more than a dead giveaway.
If as an egoist, you slight another egoist, you’ll soon be exchanging words; an I for an I.

You are always so happy here, and such an industrious little worker, full of beans, literally and metaphorically, so I'd like my usual de-stress hot chocolate please, with a nice cherry slice, with no coffee in the icing.
I'm early I know, so I'll just take my time and wait to say hello to the other customers, it's so cosy here. Good fun, too.

I am not afraid to use a risque photo to make a point or to poke fun at ourselves, but it is getting repugnant. Morgan posted a piece of work about censorship and so, in the spirit of openness, I left a pithy visual comment.
I am glad you like my work katyzzz, enjoy your respite from the storm.

The social interaction itself is a vital component of stress management.
As for the hydration factor - you're on the money
A sporting colleague's company tried to introduce 'free' juices/water/energy drinks et al - to all employees - 'delivered' to their work stations - yeah right - the concept was another bean counters brilliant idea that for the cost of a juice or whatever - then we could keep the battery hens working - improving productivity and lost down time.
Guess what . . . accountants gone now.
Cheers - oh - and nice comedic musings as well.
Enjoy your weekend.
